Hazardous Waste Management

Identify, store, track and dispose of hazardous waste the way the rules require, with records that stand up to any inspection.

Quick answer

ETP sludge, used oil, spent solvents and many process residues are hazardous waste under the Hazardous and Other Wastes Rules, 2016. Generators need MPCB authorisation, safe storage for a limited period, manifests for every consignment to an authorised facility, and an annual return filed by 30 June.

Overview

ETP sludge, used oil, spent solvents, chemical residues, contaminated containers and many process wastes are classified as hazardous under the Hazardous and Other Wastes Rules, 2016. Generators need authorisation from MPCB, must store waste safely for a limited period, send it only to authorised facilities using manifests, and file an annual return.

We identify your hazardous waste streams and their categories, obtain or renew the authorisation, design a compliant storage area, and set up the records: inventory, manifests and annual return. We also help arrange disposal through authorised treatment, storage and disposal facilities, recyclers and co-processors.

FAQ

Hazardous Waste Management: frequently asked questions

Is ETP sludge hazardous waste?
In most industries, chemical sludge from wastewater treatment is listed as hazardous waste and must be handled under the Hazardous Waste Rules. The exact classification depends on your process.
How long can hazardous waste be stored on site?
The rules allow storage for a limited period, generally up to 90 days, which MPCB may extend in specific cases. Storage beyond the permitted period is a violation, so disposal must be planned in advance.
What is a hazardous waste manifest?
A manifest is the multi-copy document that accompanies every consignment of hazardous waste from the generator to the authorised facility, creating a traceable chain of custody.
